Introduced in 2017 as the world's first truly hands-free driver assistance technology, GM’s Super Cruise kicked off an automotive revolution.
Since its introduction, GM has continued to improve this game-changing system, expanding its availability across more than 20 models from Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC. What started as an innovative concept has changed how we drive on the highway.
Super Cruise builds on the adaptive cruise control (ACC) feature to create an intelligent system that allows you to take your hands off the wheel on specially mapped highways throughout the US and Canada. Using precision LiDAR-based maps, GPS data, real-time cameras, radar sensors, and GM's OnStar connectivity, the system manages steering, braking, and even lane changing, creating the experience of having a reliable co-pilot along for the ride.
And even though the system allows for hands-free driving, safety is still GM’s number one priority. An integrated Driver Attention System continuously monitors your gaze and responsiveness, alerting you if you take your eyes off the road for too long. This balance of advanced automation and safety monitoring represents the future of highway travel, making long drives more comfortable without compromising security.
Key Strengths of Super Cruise
- Hands-Free Driving on Mapped Roads - Super Cruise is available on a comprehensive network of mapped highways across the US and Canada, and by the end of 2025, this system will cover approximately 750,000 miles of road.
- User Friendly - Enabling hands-free driving is easy: simply activate ACC, press the Super Cruise button, and wait for the green indicator. To turn it off, just hold the steering wheel and press the Super Cruise button or press the brake pedal.
- Your Co-Pilot - This feature is designed to make driving easier, but you'll still need to keep your attention on the road. If it detects that you’re not being attentive enough, there are alerts to get your attention. If you don’t respond, such as in the case of a medical event, Super Cruise gently stops the vehicle and places a call to an OnStar operator.
- Built-in Trailering Support - As if hands-free driving wasn’t unique enough, properly equipped Chevy trucks and SUVs also include built-in towing and trailering support that work together with Super Cruise. When you have a trailer attached, Super Cruise adjusts for the size, weight, and turning radius of your trailer, giving you extra confidence on the road.
- Award-Winning Driver Assistance Tech - Super Cruise was named MotorTrend’s Best Hands-Free Driving Tech for 2025, thanks to its safety, innovation, and user-friendliness.
