An Explanation of How Your Alternator Works

Your alternator is one of your car's biggest energy suppliers. It generates the right amount of electricity to your car and recharges the battery. The alternator actually gets electricity from the rotor and stator. This happens when the rotor spins inside of the stator to react to magnets and create electricity.

The voltage from the alternator is then converted into energy that can be used by the battery to recharge. This means that your vehicle should be moving to compliment the way that your alternator works. Improper use could hinder your alternator from your battery.

Alternators can also start to malfunction over time. You will begin to notice when your alternator needs to be replaced. Here is a list of signs that your alternator needs to be replaced.

  • Your engine is stalling to start
  • Your car turns off after it starts
  • Headlights are dim
  • Strange noises
  • Your indicator light is on
  • Electrical problems inside of your car
